Critter Control of Lexington

Raccoons

  • Why are racoons in my yard?

    They are attracted to food sources like garbage cans, pet food, bird seed, and water sources like bird baths. They can also seek shelter and nesting areas under decks, in crawl spaces, and in attics.
  • Why do I see them during the day?

    Racoons are primarily nocturnal but can be seen during the day, usually looking for food, especially the mother racoon. But it could also indicate that they are sick.
  • How many babies does it usually have?

    Each litter is about 3-5 babies.

Opossum

  • Do opossums carry rabies?

    They do not usually carry rabies because they have low body temperatures that rabies cannot live in
  • How many babies do they have?

    A typical litter is between 6-9 babies.
  • Why does it look dead?

    Opossums can go into a catatonic state as a defense mechanism against predators, it is best to leave them alone in this state.

Skunks

  • Will they spray me?

    Skunks are unlikely to spray unless they feel threatened. It is best to remain calm and avoid sudden movements.
  • Can you trap without them spraying?

    Typically, when trapping for skunks we use a covered trap to keep the animal calm and try to prevent it from spraying, but it is not guaranteed that they will not spray.
  • How many babies do they have, and do babies spray?

    A typical litter is about 4-9 babies. Babies can spray, but they may be less potent.

Squirrels

  • How many babies can they have?

    They usually have between 2-4 babies per litter, and 1-2 litters per year.
  • Can they cause damage?

    Yes, they often chew on wood, insulation, and wiring, which can cause significant damage to a home. They can also create entry points into the home through siding and roof returns.

Bats

  • How did it get in my attic?

    They can enter spaces as small as a dime, usually at siding gaps. Louver vents, ridge vents, and damaged gutters.
  • Are they dangerous?

    Bats are not generally dangerous to humans, but they can carry rabies which can be passed through a bite, scratch, or through bat saliva and guano.

Groundhogs (Woodchucks)

  • How do you to prevent groundhogs (woodchucks) from burrowing under my shed/deck?

    You can use a buried fence to help prevent them from burrowing under it.
  • Why are they messing up my garden/yard?

    Yards provide food, and places to burrow.
  • Are they the same as woodchucks?

    Yes, they are the same animal.

Moles

  • Can you guarantee they will be gone?

    No, we cannot guarantee complete removal since they do live underground. The best way to control them is routine baiting. Moles are territorial and will invade areas that other moles have abandoned.
  • Why do they eat the bait if it’s poisonous?

    Bait is made to mimic their primary food sources, the earth worm. The bait was designed to look and smell like earthworms.
  • Why don’t we trap them?

    It is more effective to use bait to control mole populations and their damage to lawns.

Snakes

  • Why would they be in the attic?

    Snakes’ primary food source are rodents, like mice and rats, which are commonly found in attics. The best way to get rid of snakes is to get rid of their food source.
  • How many are there?

    Snakes are usually solitary animals, but if there is an abundance of food it is possible for there to be multiple in one place.

Rodents

  • How many babies can a mouse have?

    They usually produce 9-10 pups in each litter. Mice become sexually mature at six weeks. They can reproduce about every 60 days, , which causes rodent populations to grow rapidly.
  • How did they get in my home?

    Rodents typically enter homes in the fall. They enter through construction gaps and unscreened vents near the foundation.
  • What kind of damage do they cause?

    Rodents can be very destructive; they often chew on wiring which can be hazardous to the safety of the home. They can also carry diseases which can be a health hazard to humans.
